‘Chaan-Daar’ is a place-making initiative taken up by Pune Biennale Foundation and Panchshil
Foundation for upliftment of public spaces in slums and settlements. This project is based on
the idea of “sundarta se swachta ki oor” and is appropriately called “Chaan-Daar”- a simple term
to convey the essence of the project: A metaphorical opening of minds towards beautiful and
clean living environment. This is an art and community engagement program where resident
communities are encouraged to participate in creating artworks in their neighborhoods. The
year-long project is actively supported by the local corporator – Mr. Avinash Salve, Pune
Municipal Corporation. The inauguration ceremony of the project is on 17 th December at the
hands of none other than the inspirational Jackie Shroff who has supported many such
The “Chaan-Daar” project is being developed in the vasti areas opposite to Business Bay, Yerawada. Our aim is to improve the environment of slums located in the following 3 clusters - Gaothan Area, Netaji Nagar and Yashwant Nagar.

Why beautification matters?
The county improvement achieved by beautification provides benefits for residents and tourists. Many studies have shown that clean public spaces with a proper seating arrangements are better for communities, as the greenery and public art make people interact and feel relaxed, safe and happier.
Art always enhances public places, and has been a tool for beautification and community development. Looking forward, public art offers communities a possible cost effective way to create lasting enhancement to their public spaces. Key criteria for art placement will be its visibility to tourists and visitors.
